The Board of Education established a district dress code of all students, and this dress code will be enforced at San Jose Middle School. The following are included in the District dress code:

1.  Shoes must be worn at all times. Sandals or open toed shoes are not allowed.

2.   Clothing, jewelry and personal items (backpacks, fanny packs, gym bags, water bottles etc.) shall be free of writing, pictures or any other insignia which are crude, vulgar, profane or sexually suggestive, which bear drug, alcohol or tobacco company advertising, promotions and likenesses, or which advocate racial, ethnic or religious prejudice.

3.   Hats, caps and other head coverings shall not be worn indoors.

4.   Clothes shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments.

5.   Gym shorts may not be worn in classes other than physical education except when used by the school to replace dress code violation clothes.

6.   Hair shall be clean and neatly groomed.

7.   No pajamas or slippers.

Attendance

The Governing Board believes that regular attendance plays a key role in student achievement.  Absence from school shall be excused only for health reasons, family emergencies and justifiable reasons, as permitted by law, Board Policy 5113 and administrative regulations (Education Code 46010, 47216, 48205).  Students are expected to attend school regularly and on time.  School district policy and state law require daily attendance for students between the ages of 6 and 18.

Truancy

Students shall be classified as truant if absent from school without a valid excuse three full days in one school year, or tardy or absent for more than any 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof.  Such students shall be reported to the Coordinator of Student Services or designee (Education Code 48260).

Chronic Truant

Any pupil subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory continuation education who is absent from school without a valid excuse for ten percent or more of the school days in one school year, from the date of enrollment to the current date, is deemed a chronic truant.  Such students shall be reported to the Coordinator of Student Services or designee.  (Education Code 48263.6).

Chronic Absenteeism

Students shall be classified as a chronic absentee for state reporting purposes if absent from school for any reason excused or unexcused more than 10% of the school year.

GATE is a district-designed and funded program for highly capable students. Each district in the state of California develops identification procedures and designs programs to meet the needs of their GATE students K-12.
